This exhibition is composed of three interconnected elements that collectively explore the beginning of Adelaide’s art scene, inspired by the founding of the Royal South Australian Society of Arts (RSASA) in the late 1800s. Drawing on the Society’s rich history and the cultural influences of the era, my work reflects on the themes, styles and figures that shaped South Australia’s artistic identity during this transformative period.
Lucy Zola is a visual artist and musician living and working on Kaurna Land, a multidisciplinary artist focusing her practice in ceramics, sound, and digital media, and explores themes of place, memory, and emotional responses to landscapes.
For this project, she has researched, explored, and responded to the works of RSASA artist Malcolm Carbins, creating a series of ceramic works alongside an experimental film. Carbins draws much of his inspiration from landscapes he had visited, capturing their essence through expressive color and movement. The interplay of sound and image reflects the duality of tranquility and dissonance, a recurring theme in my practice.
